Although cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-long disease, there are many aspects of life that will not be affected. Babies breast feed, and children still laugh and play, go to school, do homework and perform in talent shows. Adults go to college, take jobs, get married, and some may even decide to have children.
Daily Treatments for Cystic Fibrosis
Most individuals with CF will require airway clearance techniques (ACT) anywhere from one to four times a day. People with cystic fibrosis perform ACTs to help remove thickened mucus from the lungs to prevent bacteria build-up.
The majority of individuals with CF must remember to take digestive enzymes with each meal. The thickened mucus in the pancreas and intestines disrupts the normal flow of pancreatic enzymes. The pancreas secretes enzymes to help digest food and control blood-glucose levels. The thick, sticky mucus in the intestines prevents the enzymes from reaching the food. If the enzymes are unable to reach the food, proper digestion does not take place. Digestive enzyme medication does not absorb 100% percent of the calorie and nutrients from meals; therefore, high calorie and nutrient dense diet with vitamins should be followed.
A large percentage of cystic fibrosis patients take frequent antibiotics to control lung infections. Thickened mucus in the airways can cause bacteria to grow. Bacteria in the lungs can cause bronchitis or pneumonia. These infections can damage the lungs. Damage to the lungs is a serious complication and is usually the cause of death in individuals with CF.
Stress
Dealing with a life-long chronic disease can be stressful on the affected individual, the parents and other family members. Although many people learn to cope with the stresses of CF well, there are some individuals who may suffer from depression and anxiety disorders.
Doctor Visits
In addition to regular pediatric and family doctor visits, cystic fibrosis clinic visits may be required anywhere from one to ten times a year. Receiving medical treatment at an accredited CF center is crucial in maintaining health while living with CF. Accredited cystic fibrosis care centers are trained and educated on all areas of CF. They are knowledgeable on the most current treatment available. In addition to treatment, many people with CF learn about clinical trials and alternative therapies through CF care centers.
Individuals with cystic fibrosis can lead happy productive lives. Early intervention with appropriate treatment and exercise can help extend the life-span for individuals with cystic fibrosis.
